Trattoria Funistrada was started in 2000 by owners Tom & Holly Reay, after they located the perfect property for an Italian Restaurant in Burdickville. The building Funistrada resides in has an almost 100 year history of food service, including the best remembered Glen Lake Inn – operating for 20+ years as a German restaurant. Some people might even remember “Alfono’s”, and one neighbor recalls an earlier time in the 30’s …” I used to listen to the men at the bar singing ‘You are My Sunshine’, when I was young, sleeping on the sleeping porch of my grandparent’s cottage.” Having worked in many of the restaurants in the area – Tom was a bartender at Art’s Tavern for 13 years and Holly had a 10 year run at Joe’s Friendly Tavern – they decided they could do it, too! Both came from families who had frequented the Glen Lake Inn so when it became available – they jumped at the opportunity! With 6 mos. old daughter Carson to help, (add son Tommy 4 years later…) they set upon the task of making it what it is today. Funistrada won Traverse Magazine’s 2001 Best New Restaurant Award – and rest came naturally, including “Best Of …” awards from the Northern Express for each year in operation. Known not only for excellent Italian food – always made to order – the great atmosphere, and a staff that’s like family, leaves many guests remarking, “It’s just like my favorite place at home – but so much better!” Be sure to get your reservations in early, especially in the height of summer, as many of the regulars have ‘standing reservations’ – and any empty seats go quickly!
